Marvellous Mondragon
Mondragon
Zierikzee, on the island of Schouwen-Duiveland, is a typical Zeeland city with an impressive history. In 2019, for example, Zierikzee celebrated its 800th anniversary. With the former estuary of the Oosterschelde on its doorstep, the city is protected from flooding by the Delta Works, the Dutch defences against the advancing waters. Hotel Mondragon overlooks a picturesque canal, the Oude Haven, or ‘old port’. The hotel is named after the Spanish general Cristóbal Mondragon, because it was on this spot that he stayed when he besieged Zierikzee in 1576 on behalf of King Philip II of Spain. The colour palette in the guest rooms varies from Rembrandt red to soft green, a choice related to the sunlight at different times of the day.
French with Bakish influences
Restaurant Cristó & Le Bistrôt
At Restaurant Cristó, the menu is rich in local produce: fish from the North Sea and Oosterschelde in the summer, game from Schouwen-Duiveland in the winter. The cuisine is French oriented with Basque (Spanish) influences. As well as the gourmet restaurant, Mondragron also has an intimate Parisian bistro. Here, you can enjoy French culinary delights accompanied by delicious wines. A little bit of Paris in Zierikzee.
