Celebrate life in the Reest valley
De Havixhorst
Château hotel and restaurant De Havixhorst is housed in a manor from 1753 in the beautiful Reest Valley. With spacious suites, an exclusive restaurant and an authentic Courtyard – where lunch and dinner are served in fine weather – this château hotel and restaurant De Havixhorst is magnificent in appearance. Perhaps this is the reason why the storks return to their nest on the chimneys each spring? In the castle’s gardens, landscaped in French baroque-style, you will find art from prominent contemporary artists. The former Coach House has been transformed into one of six classy reception areas. The vaulted cellar is home to a great collection of wines, in which regular wine tastings are held. The restaurant serves many dishes using regional products: vegetables, herbs and fruits come from its own garden as much as possible. There is plenty to do in the surrounding area. Take a lovely walk through the Reest valley, visit the stork station De Lokkerij, go punting in Giethoorn or look for ancient dolmens.
Regional products and from the garden
Restaurant De Havixhorst
So much generous natural beauty, that is what you taste at De Havixhorst. There are many regional products on the menu. Fruit and vegetables from small farms dotted around the ancient cultural landscape of The Reest river or from the hotel's own garden. The finest meat from local game, Zuidwold mangalitza, tender Hoogveen lamb or own Scottish Highland beef, full of flavour. Rather than enjoying the extra course of your dinner with various cheeses at your table, you should take a seat in the authentic vaulted cellar, which houses an exclusive collection of wines. Owner and host Chris Wijland is happy to give advice on matching wines and regularly organises wine tastings under the castle's arched vaults. Weather permitting, lunch and dinner are served on one of the terraces or in the courtyard.
The chateau gardens
Castle garden and nature reserve Reestdal
The chateau’s gardens design is French baroque. In the garden, you will find works of art by many well known Dutch contemporary artists. The sculpture park is open every day for hotel guests. Just beyond the elegant castle gardens, the estate forest begins, where endless walks can be enjoyed. The forest is part of the idyllic Reestdal nature reserve. Between the tall oaks and beeches, a carriage ride, high tea or picnic is a certain pleasure.

"In this beautifully renovated castle in the middle of nature, including overnight suites, all stress will disappear smoothly. Ideal for enjoying to the fullest. Extensive as possible, with an intelligently constructed menu including perfectly fried sweetbreads with crispy sweet potato, cream of celeriac and gravy from sultanas and sherry. Careful presentation of the plates is standard, as are excellent wine and food combinations. Sommelier Chris Wijland knows what he is talking about, also father Jos is a great wine connoisseur.
