The oldest hotel in The Netherlands
Grand Hotel de Draak
The oldest document mentioning Herberg De Draak – now Grand Hotel De Draak – dates from 1397. It proves that this is the oldest hotel in the Netherlands. Spend the night in one of De Draak’s historic and characterful buildings – as you might expect, no two rooms or suites are the same – and enjoy breakfast in the classic setting of the breakfast room. After a long walk or bike ride, you can relax in the hotel’s spa and beauty centre. De Draak also has a large terrace with a view of Bergen op Zoom’s historic marketplace.
A contemporary innovative cooking style
Restaurant 1397
Over the centuries, the hotel has lost nothing of its quality, although what was once a smoke-filled room with a smouldering fire is now a contemporary restaurant called 1397 – named after the year in which De Draak certainly already existed as a catering establishment. At Restaurant 1397, you will discover a contemporary innovative cooking style with worldly influences, but Dutch cuisine forms the basis. Where possible, dishes are prepared using local ingredients: the fresh fish is from the nearby town of Tholen, and many of the vegetables are grown in the surrounding Brabantse Wal area, which runs along the border between the provinces of North-Brabant and Zeeland.
