Flicka

Kerkdriel, The Netherlands

Located along the dike, in the watery landscape between the Maas and Waal rivers, lies Flicka. Thomas and Merlijn made their dreams come true when opening Flicka with great success. Flicka is Swedish for girl. This name was chosen because of the love Thomas has for his three girls: his daughters and his wife Merlijn. Flicka's top priority is their guests experience. The atmospheric suites and the restaurant have been decorated by Merlijn, the hostess. Thomas and Merlijn are a true dream team. While Thomas, being a perfectionist, is completely focussed on his cuisine, Merlijn makes sure that the guests are pampered.

Hotel-Restaurant Hippocampus

Mol-Wezel, Belgium

Hippocampus was built around the 1900s and was for decades occupied by the managers of a local factory. In 1992, the current host and chef, Francis Scheyvaerts, bought the villa – located between Eindhoven and Antwerp – and transformed it into a gorgeous manor. He first opened a restaurant with the emphasis on refined dining. The furnishing of the restaurant and the rooms betray an English influence. This contributes to the friendly atmosphere in the former management villa. The jolly and likeable host also plays a defining role. The rooms, named after desserts, have all the creature comforts of home and are furnished partly with art-deco furniture. On cold, wintry days the bar/lounge is the place to be to really relax next to the crackling wood fire.

In the 16th century the first owner of the castle, Jacob Schimmelpenninck van der Oye, traded in German wines. Nowadays, they have an excellent collection of various wines. The rooms and suites are furnished partly in antique style, and are situated in the Coach House, the Orangery or in the Cape House, which has the atmosphere of a Cape winery. The fairytale view from the 19th century conservatory restaurant over the moat and golf course will transport you back to another era. Dinner is of course complemented with excellent wines.

Kasteel de Wittenburg

Wassenaar, The Netherlands

Kasteel De Wittenburg was built in 1899 by the aristocrat Helenus Marinus Speelman, a descendent of Cornelis Speelman, a 17th-century governor of the Dutch East Indies – modern-day Indonesia. Designed as a country retreat, this stately home has been run since the 1960s by the De Wittenburg Society as an international meeting centre, and has welcomed countless captains of industry, ministers, and foreign dignitaries. Each of the ten stylish guestrooms has an atmosphere of its own, an excellent bathroom and a view of the surrounding estate. The basement houses the contemporary French and Asian restaurant Sophie, named after Speelman’s wife, Sophie Adriënne baroness Sloet van Oldruitenborgh. The couple travelled widely as you can still see from the exquisite Chinese vases they brought home as souvenirs.
