Carelshaven had an important function in the region from as early as 1772. It lies on the grand Twickel estate, which covers an area of forty-three square kilometres, and includes 150 farmhouses. The canal was constructed by Carel George, count of Wassenaer Obdam, who lived in Twickel castle. Carelshaven began as a modest bargeman’s inn, and has developed over the centuries to become a celebrated hotel.
